Discipline

There are many examples of the mercy and justice of God found in scripture, the ultimate sacrifice of God’s Son being the greatest. Keeping this in mind our discipline policy is founded on the premise that students are rewarded for good behaviour, both individually, and as a school. These are effective and work well.

At times some students behave inappropriately and teachers need to respond so that students understand that they have acted in an uncaring selfish, rude or dangerous manner. As well as comprehending that they have done something wrong it is helpful if there is an appropriate deterrent (sanction or punishment). This is helpful both for the offending student as well as for the victim (if there is one) of the inappropriate behaviour. It is also good for all students to sense that they are in a community that does not tolerate dangerous or uncaring behaviour.

In Primary School, students need clear boundaries and a sense that things are fair. Rewards for helpful, unselfish and well-mannered behaviour are important along with any punishments.

Sanctions (punishments) need to be appropriate and “to suit the crime”, the end result bringing forgiveness, reconciliation and the chance of a new start, reflecting the Biblical precedent.
